Verify your identity with Companies House
Have you received an email like the one below?
This guide aims to answer some of the many questions that
you may have.
Is the email genuine?
Yes, but please do check who the sender is, as it may not be
long before scammers are sending phishing emails.
Why am I receiving this email?
You are a director or person of significant control of a
company in England or Wales. Essentially, Companies House have bought I
additional measures to reduce fraud. This is all part of The Economic Crime and
Corporate Transparency Act (2023). There will be further changes coming later
on, around how much information is available at Companies House to the public.
If you wish to read further information on this,
here is a link: Economic
Crime and Corporate Transparency Act: outline transition plan for Companies
House - GOV.UK
Can’t you just do it for me?
No, although we as accountants have to verify you for
Anti-Money Laundering purposes, we cannot verify your identity with Companies
House, for this process.
What happens if I don’t do it?
If you do not verify your identity with Companies House, no
documents will be able to be filed with them for your companies. If no
documents can be filed, then this will have very bad consequences for your
company and is likely to result in your company being dissolved by Companies
House.
We have more than 1 director / PSC, does each one have to do
this?
Short answer, yes. (PSC – person of significant influence,
of which is mainly a director or shareholder).
When do I need to do it by?
18th November 2025.
Will I receive more reminders if I don’t do it now?
Probably. Companies House have already sent a number of
reminders, and I doubt that it will stop there! We will also be reminding
clients later on in the year, as we will need the personal code that is
provided by Companies House, in order to file documents for your company.
How do I do this?
